Workshops are happening at RubyDog's!!!

We just have not had time to post all the workshops to the site, so call us at the store to get more info.  Here are a few to entice you, though:

MESSING AROUND WITH PAPER (aka Alternative Bookbinding) - A Newbies Series workshop
Lianne Mitchell not only sports a great name, she's a talented bookbinder who will spend the day teaching you simple bookmaking projects.   You'll learn four forms of the folded book:  the accordion, the gate-fold, the 8-fold and the wallet fold.  These books are incredibly versatile, get you thinking outside the box and allow you to explore the different possibilities of a single piece of paper.  If  you're a teacher or parent, this class offers some unique projects you can do with your kids.   What fun!
SATURDAY, APRIL 9      11:00 to 5:00      $70.00

COMBINING COLLAGE AND BEESWAX
What an opportunity to experiment with wax!  Join Shary Bartlett in this wonderful, sweet-smelling workshop as she shows you how to create textural pieces of art using molten beeswax and non-toxic encaustic waxes.  Learn how to enrich your art projects with mixed media ephemera, dried plants, oil paint, pastels, photographs and metallics.  This is  your chance to try out these popular technques before making an investment into encaustic waxes.  And, of course, beeswax is easily available if you want to recreate the fun at home.
SUNDAY, APRIL 10    11:00 to 5:00    $98.00  (includes beeswax and encaustic waxes)

VISUAL ART JOURNALLING
The journal is a time-honoured medium to express innovative beginnings and celebrate the joy of creativity.  You’ve looked at them in books and hundreds of magazines.  Isn’t it time you started journalling, yourself?  Using a variety of mixed media art techniques and writing exercises, you’ll craft an inspiring personal journal of your own.

RubyDog's Art House hosted this class a couple of years ago, at the Main Street store.  I, myself, sat in on part of it and had a great time. Learnt some amazing new techniques and was truly inspired.  A wonderful, wonderful way to spend your Wednesday nights.

3 WEDNESDAYS IN APRIL     APRIL 13 to 27
THURSDAY, MAY 5TH
6:30 to 9:00     $175.00

If you want just a small inkling of the massive potential of visual journaling, search ‘Art Journals’ at www.flickr.com

Once again, Jesse treated us to an amazing workshop.  Maybe we'll bring him up here, again, in 2011.  Stay tuned!

========================================

Last year RubyDog's hosted a 2-day workshop with Jesse Reno.  It was, in my humble opinion, the best workshop ever presented by RDs!  Oh, my gosh, all I wanted to do was paint for weeks afterward and, believe me, I never thought I would say that about painting.  I never thought I would even utter the word 'painting' with regard to myself!

Jesse is a talented, generous and  proficient artist and teacher. He's taught people who have never painted and artists who paint full time.  Regardless of your experience, be ready to get down, get dirty and enjoy an inspiring and delightful weekend!

This is a class not about painting a specific thing or outcome, its more about how we create that is important. It’s all about developing techniques and approaches to art, being pushed to further our own work and ideas using Jesse’s processes. The techniques learned here can be applied to any style of creation.  It’s about painting, painting over, layers, changing ideas, starting new ones, coming back to old ones, trying any new ideas that come to mind.  Drawing clenched fisted, wrong handed, without looking, using hands and palms to smear and mix acrylic paints, using brushes, scrapers, oil crayons and pastels in any way that comes to mind.

Learn how to mix paints right on your surface, dipping between two or three colours. You’ll see it’s not necessarily a lot of extremely different colours that make things brilliant; it’s a few with a lot of subtlety.

It’s easy to get caught up with the ideas in ones head.  The aim of this workshop is to learn that a plan is just a starting point, at best, and it’s always ok to change direction. A rigid plan can confuse us with let downs and expectations. Just because things aren’t going as planned doesn’t mean they’re going poorly.  Frustration distracts us and pushes us back. Fun and excitement move us forward. That’s why Jesse looks for techniques and approaches that are physically and mentally fun and stress free.

To quote Jesse, “....it’s abstract in a lot of ways, but it all makes sense when you see it.  I'm always looking for a new technique to inspire me. Painting in many reckless layers, searching for a meaning in random intentions then pulling out the images I begin to see. This is what I aim to instil in everybody who plays with me in my workshops. The excitement of the unexpected, creating in ways that don't seem like they should work, but do.”

This class will really open you up and remove the pressure from painting, making it fun and creative, each time showing you and reinforcing the idea that you can outshine your expectations of yourself in ways you never knew.

This is going to be an incredible weekend with a talented artist and teacher.  Whether you’ve never opened a tube of acrylic paint before or have spent the last 20 years applying it to canvas, join the fun!
